Concord Man Arrested for Attempted Murder

CARMEL—The website for the Hyatt Carmel Highlands tells guests to indulge themselves and apparently one guest took that message the wrong way.  Authorities with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Concord man for attempting to kill his wife at the resort.

A guest who was staying in a neighboring room thought he heard a woman choking. When he attempted to ask what was going on, Timothy Ryan Whicher, 51, of Concord told him that “everything was okay.”  It was then that Whicher’s wife yelled for help.

The guest called 911 and reported the incident.  A deputy with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department responded and learned that Whicher was intoxicated when he became angry with his wife for an unknown reason.

According to his wife, Whicher grabbed her from the neck and prevented her from breathing by covering her mouth and nose.  He told her that he was going to kill her.  When his wife attempted to break free a struggle ensued and he knocked her to the ground.

She at one point “begged him to think about their daughters.” She thought she was going to die.  During the struggle she bit him in the hand in an attempt to break free from him.

“It a good thing that the neighboring guest heard something,” Monterey County Sergeant Mike Burns said. “ It’s a good thing that he called 911 when he did.”

Authorities arrested Whicher on charges of attempted murder, spousal abuse and making criminal threats of death.  He was transported and booked into the Monterey County Jail.
