ADELANTO – A traffic stop this weekend resulted in the shooting death of a man that was driving a vehicle wanted in a suspected robbery.

Jarond Michael Brown, 20, of Apple Valley fled from the scene of the traffic stop and was shot by a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy who was being dragged by the suspect’s car on Palmdale Road on Saturday.

Deputies stopped a driver at an unincorporated part of Adelanto, near Victorville. A second vehicle, which included Brown, eventually drove up, according to sheriff’s department spokeswoman Cindy Beavers.

“(Brown) had introduced himself to deputies as the friend of another driver whose vehicle had been stopped,” said Beavers.

After running a check on the second vehicle, it was determined the car had been used during a recent robbery. Deputies attempted to detain Brown, who then sped away with a deputy entangled in Brown’s car.

“The deputy received medical care for moderate road rash,” said Beavers, who did not name the deputy. “The deputy (was) fearing for his safety (and) fired his duty weapon at the driver in attempts to get him to stop.”

The deputy opened fire and managed to break loose of the vehicle, and Brown continued to drive away. He was discovered several miles away. Medical personnel arrived, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
