Graffiti Trio Tagged

Santa Barbara - Just after midnight Sunday July 22^nd, an anonymous phone tip to Santa Barbara Police reported a red Nissan Altima vehicle unfamiliar to local residents parked just off State Street, the city’s primary commercial thoroughfare and tourist destination.

According to Sgt. Riley Harwood, SBPD Public Information Officer, “two officers responded to the scene and observed three individuals” who were apparently endeavoring to conceal themselves behind the vehicle.  SBPD Officer Bruno Peterson and Officer Kyle Crooks approached the trio hiding in the dark as one of the officers spotted “several different locations…that had been spray-painted with graffiti,” Harwood reported to the media.

The officers noted fresh impromptu artwork sprayed all over adjacent curbs, sidewalks, and utility meters as they contacted three young men: Jose Carachure, 19, Jesus Aguiree, 19, and Eric Rodriguez, 20.  Each of them were identified as having paint on their hands and clothing that matched the street “art” which, according to Harwood, “encompassed over 100 square feet” of property, with a damage estimate of approximately $1800.

Without passing judgment upon the aesthetic appeal of the artwork in question, officers arrested all three young men on charges of felony graffiti vandalism.  The three would-be Michelangelos were booked into Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $20,000 each, where presumably their art supplies will be limited to stubby golf pencils and commissary writing paper.
