FRESNO – A fight between two families led to the fatal shooting of a man in Central Fresno on Monday night.

The shooting happened at a residence in the 2000 block of North Brawley Avenue near Shields Avenue. Police had been called to the location around 6:30 p.m. for a disturbance or fight. The shooting took place as officers were in route to the residence.

Police discovered that Daniel Cabrera, 40, of Fresno had been shot and was critically injured. He was taken to the hospital, but the Fresno County Coroner’s Office reported today that he died from his wounds.

Jack Richard Varela

Police arrested Jack Richard Varela, 48, of Fresno this morning on suspicion of homicide. He was booked into the Fresno County Jail.

When officers first arrived on the scene, they found members from two families yelling at each other and trading insults.

“We had to just try to break everybody up to get individual statements from everybody at the house to try to determine what took place,” said Lt. Anthony Martinez with the Fresno Police Department.

Police said that the shooting took place because of ongoing problems between Cabera and Varela, both of whom live at the property. Police say Monday’s incident escalated into a large family fight and ended with Cabera’s shooting.

Family members have told the media that Cabera had attacked Varela’s wife on several occasions, including on Monday night.

Varela’s wife and other family members received medical attention after the incident.
