MORENO VALLEY – A Riverside County deputy shot a man, yet to be identified by the coroner, after a fight at a Moreno Valley park on Sunday afternoon, said officials.

County spokesperson Sgt. Lisa McConnell said the man, who was either in his late teens or early 20s, was taken to an area hospital where he later died of his wounds.

According to a release, the man was seen harassing children at a park at the corner of Frederick St. and Cottonwood Ave. A caller told a sheriff’s dispatcher that a male adult was seen near the park’s restrooms, said information specialist Albert Martinez.

Incident occurred at Moreno Valley Community Park

The first officer on the scene made contact with the suspect in front of the restroom. Martinez said a struggle followed that ended with the officer involved shooting.
Additional officers arrived, along with a Cal Fire and American Medical Response ambulance service, rendering first aid to the suspect. He was transported to a nearby hospital and was declared dead shortly after the incident, which occurred at 4:10 p.m.
Investigators from the Moreno Valley Police Dept. and county sheriff’s central homicide unit were called out to take over the investigation.
Martinez said the officer involved in the shooting, who is unidentified, was placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. The officer, said McConnell, suffered minor injuries during the scuffle with the suspect.
No one else was hurt, she said, even though the park was packed with people. McConnell was not sure if the suspect, who reportedly knocked down the deputy on a sidewalk near the restroom, had a weapon. According to a report, the man got up and walked away.
