SANTA MARIA – Police arrested a woman who testified during a recent street-gang trial for lying on the witness stand.

Diana Perez Escobedo

Diana Perez Escobedo, 37, was arrested on Dec. 27 and charged with perjury after an investigation revealed that she lied during the November 2012 trial of Santa Maria gang member Jesus Quevedo, according to police.

Escobedo was called to the stand during the trial as a defense witness and testified on behalf of Quevedo, a Santa Maria West Park street-gang member.

At the conclusion of the trial, a perjury investigation was initiated into Escobedo’s sworn testimony by Santa Maria police detectives. The investigation revealed that Escobedo intentionally made false statements during her testimony, police said.

Escobedo was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail, where she’s being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
