SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Police Department is investigating a pair of recent robberies, both of which involved snatching gold necklaces.

Around noon on March 2, a male walked in front of a woman who was pushing a shopping cart in the 6600 block of Stockton Boulevard. When the victim stopped the cart to avoid hitting the suspect, he reached over to her neck and snatched her necklace. The suspect then ran across the parking lot, jumped into a red four-door compact car and drove away, according to a police press release.

The suspect was described as an Asian male in his early 20s, 5-foot-7, 165 pounds, with black hair and black coat and pants.

Around 5 p.m. the day before in the 6100 block of Lemon Hill Avenue, a male ran up to the victim from behind, grabbed her necklace from her neck and kept running, the press release states.

The suspect was described as a 27- to 28-year-old white male with a black beanie cap and black sweatshirt and pants.

Police said that with the increasing value of gold — currently at $1,400 per ounce — people should be more cautious about wearing gold jewelry in public.

“We’re finding in burglaries and other robberies, gold is one of the items being taken, and so we’re getting information that’s one of the commodities that suspects like to look for,” said police spokesman Sgt. Norm Leong. “It’s a commodity to sell.”
