Possible explosive device found at Carlsbad library

CARLSBAD – The Georgina Cole Library opened three hours behind schedule Wednesday, after a bomb scare was called in to Carlsbad police at 8:18 a.m.

Investigations Commander Lt. Kelly J. Cain issued a release concerning the May 4 event.

Approximately 16 minutes following the threat, police arrived at the library, located at 1250 Carlsbad Village Dr., and proceeded to place a call to the San Diego County Bomb Squad for further investigation of the object in question.

The alleged explosive was described as a gray, clay-like device with wires sticking out of it and measuring approximately 2 inches by 10 inches.

Located near the building’s front entrance – between a concrete trash container and the library wall – the bomb team’s robot inspected and ultimately destroyed the device.

Declaring the scene clear at approximately 11 a.m., the bomb squad collected evidence for an ongoing investigation and the library opened for operation around noon.

“Everything was handled wonderfully; the police, fire and bomb teams did a great job,” said Suzanne Smithson, deputy library director. “We opened about two and half hours late and – once the streets and parking lots were cleared – people immediately came to the front door for (access), but fewer questions were asked than anticipated.”

There is no suspect information available at this time.

The investigation is continuing through the San Diego County sheriff’s and Carlsbad police departments.
