RIALTO – Police arrested two known gang members on Tuesday night after one fired at officers during a foot pursuit.

Richard Heredia, 28, and Adrian Cardenas, 20, both of Rialto, were identified in a news release as those arrested by police. Police have had previous contact with both men.

At 5:15 p.m., a Rialto Police Department gang unit pulled over a car in the 1100 block of West Grove Street, according to reports. The two men, Heredia and Cardenas, immediately ran from the car. Officers caught up with one man right away while the other continued to run.

While officers continued to track down the second man, he fired multiple shots. Eventually, the gang unit caught the second suspect and arrested him.
None of the officers were wounded, according to a police spokesperson. Also, no one else was struck by gunfire.
While the investigation is continuing, reports were that only one of the suspects was in possession of a gun.
Heredia and Cardenas were booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. It is likely that the men will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer or the attempted murder of a police officer.
One of the suspects was taken to nearby Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment of an illness, but was not apparently injured during the incident.
Police said pulling the car over, a Chevrolet Tahoe, was just a routine traffic stop. They are still searching for the driver of the Tahoe, who drove away from the scene while the gang unit tracked down the two men who fled from the car.
