Robbery suspect nabbed after fake story

REDLANDS – A 30-year-old manager of a Jack-In-The-Box restaurant was arrested by police for falsely reporting a carjacking and kidnapping, and having robbed the cash deposits.

Monica Cazares of San Bernardino was arrested for embezzlement after reporting she had been carjacked and robbed by two men while transporting close to $9,000 in cash deposits to the bank. Detectives, who had reviewed video footage from a police department surveillance camera system, determined that Cazares did not make truthful statements to them.

“We have cameras at Lugonia and Tennessee,” said police spokesman Carl Baker, “right near the Jack-In-The-Box where the suspect worked.”

Baker said those cameras checked, along with cameras at Colton Avenue and Texas Street “in discrediting her story.”

Investigators determined that Cazares drove to her San Bernardino home, stashed the cash deposit, came back to Redlands and staged the carjacking, kidnapping and robbery on Pioneer Street before calling police.

After a subsequent search of her residence, detectives discovered several thousand dollars in cash. Cazares was arrested two days after the crime, charged and transported to Central Detention Center in San Bernardino.
