Man pleads guilty to setting Galleria mall fire

SACRAMENTO – The man accused of setting the Westfield Galleria mall in Roseville on fire pleaded guilty to arson charges.

According to court documents, Alexander Piggee, 23, of Sacramento sparked a fire in the garden area of a North Highlands Wal-Mart on Oct. 21, 2010 before starting a fire that caused $55 million in damages inside the Galleria mall.

Piggee entered the mall’s Game Stop shortly after 10 a.m. and demanded that a store employee leave the store before igniting a fire in the back area storage room, documents also revealed.  The fire quickly spread through the ceiling destroying a large portion of the mall.

The Galleria fire was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives team as well as various local agencies.

Piggee pleaded guilty to two counts of arson.  Each count carries a minimum prison term of five years, with a maximum of 20 years.  He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 24.
