SAN BERNARDINO – A shooting suspect was killed, a county deputy sheriff was wounded and two more suspects were arrested on Thursday morning in an investigation that was triggered by a March 22 rape and robbery in Yucaipa.

Police did not identify the man that was shot and killed when gunfire took place just after 10 a.m. at the Stater Bros. shopping complex at the corner of Highland and Del Rosa avenues.

The unidentified body of a man police said was a suspect was lying in the parking lot in front of an H. Salt Fish & Chips restaurant, near the Stater Bros. store.

County sheriff’s investigators from nearby Highland and Yucaipa were investigating the rape and robbery when they discovered a suspect might be shopping in the store center, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Cynthia Bachman.

“They had a known suspect (in the Yucaipa robbery-rape),” said Bachman, “and he was known to be armed and dangerous.”

The suspect ran when spotted by deputies, and then allegedly opened fire, striking an officer.

Additional deputies arrived while an undercover officer chased after the suspect. More gunfire was exchanged before the suspect was struck with a fatal shot.

Bachman said the suspect’s shot, using a handgun, struck the deputy in the leg. Several deputies returned fire, striking the suspect, who died at the scene. The suspect’s body remained in the parking lot for several hours while the area was cordoned off and the investigation continued.

Another male suspect, along with the female, was arrested.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller said that the injured deputy was released on Thursday afternoon. “He is now recuperating at home with his family and is doing well.”

Yucaipa is a community located southeast of the site of Thursday’s shooting, approximately 15 miles from the scene.
