SANTA MARIA – A Santa Maria man was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly fired a gun at an unidentified male victim, who testified against the suspect’s brother in a previous court case.
Raheem Jamal Coleman, 19, was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail on Monday, Nov. 19, on charges of attempted murder and being a suspected member of a criminal street gang. He’s being held at County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
According to police, Coleman confronted the male victim in the 1900 block of S. McClelland just after 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 19, flashed gang-related hand signs at the man and made reference to the victim testifying against Coleman’s brother in a past criminal court case.
After allegedly flashing the gang-related hand signs at the victim, Coleman produced a hand gun and shot at the man, who wasn’t injured during the incident. Coleman fled the area after the shooting, police said.
Police located Coleman’s vehicle later in the day in the 200 block of E. Inger, where investigators watched the vehicle for a few hours before the suspect was seen walking the in the area. He was arrested without incident.
During a search of a residence at the location, investigators located a gun that they believe Coleman used in the alleged shooting. A subsequent search warrant was served at what is believed to be Coleman’s primary residence in the 1900 block of S. McClelland, police said.
Because the investigation is ongoing, police will not release any additional information regarding the past criminal court case or Coleman’s suspected gang involvement.
