SoCal teens lead authorities on high-speed chase

POMONA — Three teenagers were in custody early Monday morning after leading authorities on a high speed chase for nearly an hour.

News of the pursuit reached Southern California airwaves when the teens — ages 17, 16 and 15 — reportedly stole a car at Yucaipa Community Park on the 34000 block of Oak Glen Road. San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies spotted the teens within minutes of the 6:26 a.m. theft, and attempted to pull the vehicle over on the main road through the city, Yucaipa Boulevard.

The car, a 1990 silver Acura Integra, sped away and led law enforcement on a chase down the westbound portion of Interstate 10.

The stolen Integra reached speeds of 100 mph as it struck at least four vehicles along the way. The driver pulled off in Pomona, where he eventually found himself cornered.

“The chase ended because they just stopped in cul-de-sac in a residential neighborhood, so they had no choice but to stop,” said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller.

California Highway Patrol units arrested the driver and two passengers at 7:19 a.m. Miller said the CHP took over the pursuit when the stolen vehicle reached the Los Angeles County line.

“So far, there’s a report of four vehicles being hit during this chase,” Miller said. “There’s no report of any injuries.”

She said the cars were sideswiped during the chase and that there were no spinouts during the early morning rush hour traffic. Highway Patrol units cornered the teens after they turned onto Dudley Street in Pomona, pulling into Del Rosa Place, a cul-de-sac. The car’s occupants abandoned the vehicle, attempting to get away on foot, but officers had them in custody within minutes.

Miller said no names will be released due to the fact that the Hispanic teens are all juveniles.
