Final suspect in fatal barbershop shooting arrested

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento County sheriff’s detectives arrested the last suspect in last year’s South Sacramento shooting that killed two people, including 30-year-old Monique Nelson.
Larry Dean Jones, 29, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. Thursday at a residence in Sacramento County, and has been booked into the county jail on charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bail.
On Dec. 14, 2010, a shootout ensued between members of two rival gangs in the parking lot of the Fly Cuts Barber Shop in the 6900 block of Stockton Boulevard. Nelson, an innocent bystander, shielded her 2-year-old son, Jayden Anthony Butler-Nelson, from the bullets and was killed in the process, according to a report by The Sacramento Bee.
Five other gang members involved in the shooting were arrested in February. Lonnie Mitchell, 24, his brother Louis Mitchell, 19, James Carney, 31, Charles Barksdale, 29 and Dominique Lott, 27, had all been arraigned, sheriff’s spokesman Jason Ramos said.
Nelson’s funeral in December at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Oak Park drew about 1,000 people, according to the Bee report.
Twenty-year-old Marvion Barksdale, who was either Charles Barksdale’s brother or cousin, was also slain in the shooting. Ramos said he was also a gang member.
Jones is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the Sacramento County Main Jail, Department 63. The other five are to appear in court for a settlement conference at 8:30 a.m. on April 29.
Records also show that Jones has five other pending felony cases, including possession of cocaine, controlled substances and firearm, and receiving stolen property.

Glad to hear all who were involved in this have been caught. It’s very sad the child has to grow up without its mother. But I know like the mother, I would do anything to protect my children as well. Are we not safe anywhere? Can more be done to teach the dangers of being involved in gangs and the importance of stemming away from them?
