Phone call interrupted by armed robbery

Rough & Ready, Calif (Nov. 26, 2008) —  A Rough & Ready man was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of being the armed robber who interrupted a 19-year old woman’s cell phone call.

The Nevada County incident report says the woman had parked at the Rough & Ready Market on Saturday to make the call, when she was suddenly accosted by a young man pointing a pistol at her.

Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal says the robber demanded money “and threatend to shoot her ifs she did not comply.” Royal said the victim was not otherwise injured in the incident.

Royal said deputies from the department’s Major Crimes Unit developed information which led to Monday’s raid on a residence in the 14-thousand block of Rough & Ready Highway.

Deputies reported finding Casey D. Soward hiding in the attic.

“Our officers brought with them a dog trained to find weapons,” Royal said, adding that among evidence seaized was an Air-Soft pellet pistol, which he confirmed was similar to the one reportedly used in the crime.

Soward, identified as a 20-year old landscapper who resided at the raided home, was arrested on suspicion of attempted armed robbery. He was then transported to the Wayne Brown Jail where bail was initially set at $25,000.
