Vallejo man dies in officer involved shooting

A 41-year-old Vallejo man was shot several times after reaching for what appeared to police to be a gun. The incident was the second officer-involved shooting in three days.

According to the Vallejo Times Herald, two police officers conducted a DUI patrol at Santa Clara and Indiana streets on Monday. The officers saw a white 1999 Lexus being driven without its headlights on, not stopping for stoplights or stop signs, police said.

The driver, later identified as Anton Barrett Sr., led police to the 200 block of Wilson Avenue where he and his two passengers got out of the vehicle and fled in different directions.

One of the officers saw Barrett in an apartment complex. The officer, whom police refused to identify, told Barrett to put his hands up and asked him to raise his hands, but Barrett refused, police said.

Police said Barrett pulled out a dark-colored metal object from his waistband, which the officer believed was a gun. Barrett was shot several times and fell to the sidewalk. He tried to get up when another officer shocked him with a stun gun, according to the Vallejo Times Herald.

Barrett was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek by ground ambulance, but died at 5:34 a.m.
Police found one of the other passengers, Anton Barrett, 18, was found hiding in nearby bushes. He was arrested for resisting arrest. The other passenger that fled from the vehicle was not found.

The Solano County District Attorney’s Office, which looks into all officer-involved shootings, will investigate the incident.
