VIASLIA, Calif. — An elderly Visalia woman’s vigilant eye on her apartment’s mailbox thwarted a possible case of identity theft this week.

The woman called the Visalia Police Department when she spotted another woman attempting to steal her mail on the afternoon of December 1, according to Visalia Police Sgt. Steve Phillips.

When police arrived at the apartment complex and stopped Nichole Suzanne Teran, 30, of 14964 Oak Ranch Drive in Visalia to question her about the complaint, she showed objective signs of intoxication, said Sgt. Phillips. Teran gave Officer Isaac Stephens permission to search her purse, but what he found didn’t exonerate her. Within her purse hid several pieces of mail and a driver’s license — neither of which belonged to her — and a glass pipe — which allegedly did belong to her.

Teran was arrested on charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of stolen property, according to Visalia Police. She was booked into the Tulare County Jail.
