LA County Sherrif’s Deputy Charged for Brutal Attack Involving Wife, Affair
IRVINE (September 29, 2008) – Robert Avery McClain, 34 of Irvine and a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department, was arrested Monday for charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault and domestic violence.
The charges stem from a brutal attack on a 23 year old man who is believed to have been having an affair with the deputy’s wife. She was also assaulted by McClain, according to police, when he confronted her about the alleged affair.
Irvine Police initially responded at 7:15 am to a report of a man injured and bleeding in an apartment leasing office located at 1000 Payton in Irvine.
They arrived to find the man so badly beaten that he was unable to report what had happened. He was taken to a local hospital where he was reportedly in stable condition.
Police were then informed that a woman identified both as McClain’s wife and a friend of the injured young man, had driven herself to a local hospital and reported the attack to hospital personnel.
After interviewing her, police were able to piece together what had happened and later arrested McClain who was transported to a local hospital with injuries of his own, apparently sustained in the attack, according to police.
Police believe the attack occurred sometime between 10:30pm Sunday night and 7am Monday morning.
While police haven’t gone into detail regarding the young man’s injuries, saying only that he had been “cut with a sharp instrument”, unnamed law enforcement and hospital sources said that the assailant had attempted to castrate him.
An additional law enforcement source also confirmed that the victim had cuts around his groin area.
The victim’s aunt said he lived in the same apartment complex where McClain’s wife worked in the leasing office.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s authorities reportedly moved to immediately terminate McClain as a deputy. “The Sheriff believes strongly that this must be acted upon,” said Sheriff’s spokesman, Steve Whitmore.
