Cops arrest Sac man for murder
Sacramento police have arrested a 30-year-old man for murder.
According to Officer Konrad von Schoech, Sacramento Police Department media relations officer, Leopoldo Velasco III was murdered Friday night. During a telephone interview, von Schoech said that officers responded to the 3900 block of 17th Avenue after receiving reports of shots being fired.
“Our officers arrived there at around 9:07 p.m. Friday,” he said. When they arrived, the officers discovered the 23-year-old Velasco and had him transported to U.C. Davis Medical Center. “Velasco later died of his injuries.”
In an SPD press release, it stated that detectives and crime scene investigators, during the course of the investigation, had learned that Velasco had been visiting his girlfriend prior to the shooting.
Von Schoech said that Velasco had gotten into an argument with a neighbor, James Castillo. “Things escalated and Castillo then allegedly shot (Velasco).”
Castillo then allegedly fled the scene. The SPD reported that the suspect may have been driving a 2004 white Dodge Intrepid.
Von Schoech reported that Castillo was taken into custody “without incident” Saturday night.
According to the Sacramento County Main jail’s Web site, Castillo was booked at 10:54 p.m. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
