SANTA BARBARA — At approximately 2 p.m. Aug. 8, a male resident of Santa Barbara’s beachfront Mesa area answered a knock at his door.
Knowing one of the visitors by sight, the young man opened the door and was quickly overpowered by three male adults who assaulted him — causing injuries to his face, head and leg — and quickly relieved him of two ounces of marijuana and $200 in cash. The three men, later identified as Dominique Xavier Battle, Miles Mims, both 20 years of age, and Carl Douglas Whaley, 19, immediately fled the picturesque area overlooking Ledbetter Beach.
The victim was briefly hospitalized while five Santa Barbara Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop four hours later and arrested Battle, who was booked on charges of robbery, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy. Mims was detained at another subsequent traffic stop and found to be in possession of a replica firearm. He was booked on charges identical to those of Battle, while his female companion in the vehicle, Gina Mead, was booked on outstanding traffic warrants.
Whaley, considered armed and dangerous by authorities, remains at large and is being sought by multiple agencies. He is identified as a black male adult, 5 foot 9 inches tall, weighing 155 pounds, with ties to the Los Angeles area.
