Accused rapist and kidnapper's bail set at $30 million
PLACERVILLE — Bail was increased to $30 million for Jaycee Dugard’s alleged captor Phillip Garrido Monday morning in El Dorado County Superior Court.
His wife Nancy Garrido remains held without bail. The couple has pleaded not guilty to 29 felony counts of kidnapping, rape, sexual assault and false imprisonment.
Phillip Garrido, 58, looking gaunt and wearing a large bandage on his nose, remained silent during most of the brief court appearance amid a throng of media from throughout the country, only responding “yes sir,” when asked by Judge Douglas Phimister if he agreed to waive the standard 60 days for his preliminary hearing.
Nancy Garrido, 54, kept her head down and her face shielded from TV cameras.
Defense attorney Susan Gellman requested a psychiatric evaluation of her client, Phillip Garrido, as did Gilbert Maines, who is representing Nancy Garrido.
Jaycee Dugard, missing since 1991, has spent the last 18 years in a ramshackle tent enclosure in the backyard of the Garrido’s Antioch home.
Dugard was kidnapped at a bus stop near her home in South Lake Tahoe on June 10, 1991, and wasn’t found until her alleged captors brought her and two children Garrido reportedly fathered with the victim into a police station in Concord, according to authorities.
Dugard’s alleged kidnapper has a prior history of kidnap, molestation and rape that dates back to 1979. He was released on parole after serving 11 years of a 50-year sentence.
Judge Phimister agreed to the increase of Phillip Garrido’s bail, stating that he “reviewed various factors,” including the protection of the public and flight risk possibility, as well as the gravity of the charges and potential prison time the suspect faces.
