VENTURA — Sometimes the revolving door of justice swings faster than usual.

Jose Alexander Dominguez, 22, was leaving the Ventura County Jail at 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 11 when rural crimes deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office arrested him in connection with 28 area farm and ranch burglaries.

According to sheriff’s spokesman Drew Sugars, Dominguez was being held in Ventura County Jail on suspicion of more than 50 agricultural equipment thefts throughout Ventura County. Four days after his arrest on those charges, Dominguez posted bail, but Ventura County authorities immediately notified Deputy John McCarthy of Santa Barbara’s Office of Rural Crimes, who then put the cuffs back on Dominguez at the doorstep of the Ventura jail on suspicion of perpetrating what may ultimately amount to more than 70 similar crimes involving ranches, construction sites and vineyards throughout Santa Barbara County.

In a statement provided to the media by Sugars, Deputy McCarthy had high praise for the inter-agency cooperation between Ventura and Santa Barbara.

“This arrest underscores what can be accomplished when agencies work together, and we’re not done yet,” he said, indicating that Santa Barbara detectives are currently working on cases involving verified reports of more than $300,000 in stolen equipment from Santa Ynez, Goleta and Carpinteria.

Dominguez has been booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on a no-bail immigration hold.

Ventura County sheriff’s officials are working with Santa Barbara law enforcement on a rural crimes case.
