Fresno apartment complex endures second shooting in one week
FRESNO – Police are investigating a shooting that took place in southwest Fresno at an apartment complex on East Church Avenue near Martin Luther King Boulevard over the weekend.
Gunfire broke out at the complex around 8:40 p.m. Saturday. When police arrived, they discovered that two men, ages 53 and 45, had been shot. According to police, the two men had been talking in the courtyard with another person when the shooting began.
Police said there were at least two separate shootings, and one witness reported hearing at least 20 shots fired. Investigators on the scene kept finding more spent casings as they searched the area, said Lieutenant Mike Doyle of the Fresno Police Department.
“We had to extend our crime scene several times because we were finding more and more evidence,” Doyle said.
Investigators said that there were multiple gunmen, all of whom ran away in different directions before police arrived on the scene.
The two men who were injured were likely innocent bystanders, investigators said, but no motive has yet been established for the shooting.
The 45-year-old victim was shot in the head and is in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center. The older victim was hit in the abdomen and has been treated and released from the hospital.
This was the second shooting to occur at the same apartment complex in the past week. It is unknown whether the two incidents are related.
