Deputies involved in early-morning shooting
SACRAMENTO — An unidentified man was transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael after being shot by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies early Friday morning.
Deputies responded to a call about gunshots being fired at an apartment complex around 4:30 a.m. at 5018 Marconi Ave. A resident of the complex told deputies that a male adult, who was also armed with a knife, had fired an automatic weapon, according to a press release from the sheriff’s department.
Deputies then confronted the suspect who retreated into one of the apartment units. The suspect opened the door and advanced toward the deputies with a knife. Two deputies fired their weapons at the suspect, who dropped the knife after sustaining a gunshot wound to his upper body, the press release states.
Sheriff’s spokesman Jason Ramos said there was no one in the room with the suspect, and it is still unknown whether the suspect was drunk or on drugs at the time of the shooting.
The suspect, whose name is yet to be released, is not believed to be in a life-threatening condition. He will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer once he is medically cleared, the press release states.
The sheriff’s department, as well as the district attorney’s office will conduct investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, in accordance to the sheriff’s department’s policies and procedures, the two deputies who fired gunshots will be on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investgation, the press release states.
