Teen dies in Antioch gang fight
ANTIOCH – A 16-year-old Oakley teen was shot and killed after a group of alleged gang members crashed a local birthday party.
The shooting took place Aug. 20 at the 2800 block of Seville Court where 16-year-old Martin Navarro was perceived to be a rival gang member, Lt. Diane Aguinaga of the Antioch Police Department explained.
A group of gang members entered the party from the garage where partygoers were dancing. The gathering had been announced on Facebook and more than 100 guests were invited, according to Aguinaga.
Navarro, a relative of the family who lived in the home, got into a heated argument with the gang members which erupted in gunfire, according to reports.
“It is important to make clear that the residents of the home are not gang members,” Aguinaga said.
Partygoers and gang members scattered from the scene after gunshots erupted. Several calls were made reporting the incident at the party at approximately 10:17 p.m., Aguinaga said.
Navarro was taken to Sutter Delta Memorial Hospital where he died.
A 17-year-old female, whose name was not released due to her age, was also struck by gunfire.
“The 17-year-old female who was also shot while at the residence, was driven to the hospital by a friend,” Lt. Scott Willerford stated in a press release. “She had a single gunshot wound. She was treated for her injury and later released.”
Police are still investigating details and motivations for the shooting as well as how the female victim was injured.
