Ex-con captured after leading Fairfield police on chase
FAIRFIELD – The Fairfield Police Department on Monday caught a well-known criminal following a short chase through the city streets.
Daniel Ontiveras, 28, of Suisun City was booked into Solano County Jail for stealing a vehicle, resisting arrest and a parole violation. He is currently on parole for grand theft.
On Monday, the Suisun Police Department reported a stolen vehicle that occurred at the train station at 9:09 a.m. The information was immediately sent to county agencies. At 9:19 a.m., Officer Bee Xiong of the Fairfield Police Department spotted the stolen vehicle, a red Ford Escort, at Pennsylvania and Woolner avenues in Fairfield. Officer Xiong followed the vehicle as it turned into an apartment complex in the 200 block of Pennsylvania. The suspect stopped the car and took off running, hopping fences into a residential area.
The suspect was seen running into the area of Lawrence Drive. Officers immediately cordoned off the area as a CHP airplane responded at the police department’s request. As officers were conducting a yard-to-yard search, the suspect left his hiding place and began to run. The suspect was hiding in an empty trash bin at a residence in the 200 block of Lawrence Dr.
The CHP airplane immediately spotted the suspect as he jumped over a fence into an apartment complex in the 200 block of Pennsylvania. The CHP airplane directed officers to the suspect, who was quickly apprehended.
“The quick apprehension of the suspect was due in large part to the fantastic service provided by the CHP aircrew,” said Lt. Greg Hurlbut of the Fairfield Police Department. “They did a great job of maintaining a visual on the suspect and providing updates on the radio to direct officers on the ground to quickly apprehend the suspect without injury.”
Ontiveras, according to the Daily Republic newspaper, was arrested in May, June, July and August. Instead of prosecuting him for a felony or misdemeanor, court record show that he was sent back to San Quentin prison – for terms that lasted only a short time.
Hurlbut said that his department will be pressing the district attorney’s office to seek the maximum punishment for Ontiveras based on his established history of crime in the community.
