Neighbors help chase down burglary suspect
REDLANDS – Neighbors who heard a woman call for help chased down a cat burglar suspect and held him until police arrived Tuesday night.
Redlands police arrested Stephen Joseph Mize, 23, of Yucaipa and Kendric Lee Schumann, 18, of San Bernardino.
The woman, who lived in the 500 block of Cajon St., reportedly discovered one of them in her house. She walked out of her residence shortly after 5:30 p.m. to take out the trash, officials said.
When she walked back inside, she discovered a man in the home. He ran after being confronted by the unidentified woman.
“The burglary was in progress,” said Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker.
Neighbors heard the woman’s call for help and several chased one of the fleeing suspects for several blocks.
“The neighbors were all men in the 20s,” Baker said.
The neighbors detained the suspect until police arrived. The second suspect, acting as a lookout, was arrested in the area a short time later.
Baker said neither suspect appeared to be connected to any other burglaries in the area. Redlands has been victimized by other burglaries in recent months.
Baker said the neighbors aren’t being identified at this time, “but they are being recommended for commendations.”
Mize is being held for burglary and conspiracy, his bail set at $125,000. Schumann is being held on conspiracy, bail set at $75,000. Both were sent to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
Anyone with additional information, Baker said, is being asked to contact Redlands police (909-798-7681).
