A 34-year-old man accused of killing his 62-year-old mother in San Luis Obispo appeared before a judge this week for a preliminary hearing.
Christopher Shumey, who was arrested in September for allegedly shooting his mother, Karen Shumey, with a shotgun, appeared before Judge Michael Duffy in San Luis Obispo Superior Court.
Shumey, under the advice of his attorney, Pierre Blahnik, is planning to plead not guilty by reason of insanity. He will be appointed doctors to evaluate his mental capacity,
Shumey is believed to have shot his mother after the two were engaged in an argument.
His next appearance is scheduled for Jan. 5.
