Suspect arrested after evading police
A driver suspected of potential identity theft was arrested early this morning after a brief attempt to elude police.
According to Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza, a deputy attempted to make a vehicle stop for a code violation in the area of Moorpark Avenue and Camina Escuela in San Jose.
Cardoza says the driver failed to pull over and continued westbound on Moorpark for a few blocks before stopping in the middle of the road and fleeing the vehicle on foot, leaving two occupants inside the car. One of the occupants told deputies that the suspect may have been armed.
While a search of the car was underway, other deputies pursued the suspect with the assistance of a police dog and eventually located him in a nearby backyard just before 5 a.m. The search of the car turned up stolen mail and a stolen handicapped placard.
Cardoza says the suspect had minor injuries and is being treated at a nearby hospital before being transferred to Santa Clara County Jail.
The suspect, who failed to provide his identity at the time of his arrest, is facing charges of possession of stolen property and resisting arrest. The two occupants of the vehicle have been charged with possession of stolen property.
A team of Sheriff’s Deputies are still in the area searching for any possible weapons that may have been left behind by the suspect.
