Vallejo police investigate shooting death of suspected robber of jewelry store
Vallejo police are investigating the shooting death of a man suspected of trying to rob a jewelry store on the corner of Broadway and Illinois Streets.
Police said a 37-year-old Hercules man was shot after entering the Carrillo’s Jewelry Store with a gun, according to the Vallejo Times Herald. Police were notified at about 12:52 p.m. Thursday when a woman called in sounding hysterical to report a robbery in progress. When officers arrived, they found the woman and her husband, both store employees, outside the store and the suspected robber dead inside the store. Officers determined he had been shot inside the store.
According to the Vallejo Times Herald, a press release was issued explaining that the suspect, a black man, entered the store, vaulted the jewelry counter, and entered the doorway of the shop’s office while brandishing a handgun. The owner was further back in the office and, fearing for his life, reached for a nearby handgun and shot the suspect inside the office. Attempts by the Vallejo Fire Department and Medic Ambulance to revive the suspect were unsuccessful.
According to the Vallejo Times Herald, the deceased man had identification on him, though his identity was not confirmed. Police said that further information, including how many times he had been shot, might be revealed later.
The man and woman outside the store were taken to Vallejo Police Department headquarters for questioning. Police said that two guns were found at the scene. Police are planning to review surveillance tapes to further investigate the incident and to determine if the suspect was acting alone, according to the Vallejo Times Herald.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Drew Ramsay of the major case section at VPD at 1-800-488-9383.
