Elk Grove PD Identify Murder Suspect
The Elk Grove Police Department is asking for the community’s help in locating Ryan Alan Hays, 25, who is wanted in connection with the shooting death of Joseph Oropesa, 19, according to a press release issued by the Elk Grove PD on May 8.
On May 6, officers reportedly responded to the 9600 block of Elk Grove Florin Road regarding a disturbance in the parking lot. The caller had indicated someone was down in the parking lot and they had heard a gunshot. According to the release, upon arrival officers and paramedics discovered Oropesa had been shot in the head. He was transported to a hospital, but did not survive.
During the course of the investigation, detectives reportedly contacted witnesses and following up on several tips as to who was responsible for the shooting. They had identified Hays as the person responsible for the homicide, according to the press release.
Two photos have been released of Hays – one a 2008 booking photo that reportedly shows Hays with less hair, and a more recent photo. Detectives believe Hays is still in possession of the vehicle taken for Oropesa, a black 1992 Ford Explorer two-door with California license plate 3BHF649.
The firearm used in the homicide has reportedly not been recovered, and detectives believe Hays is still in possession of it and should be considered armed and dangerous. Detectives are reportedly still working on the motive for the crime.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Hays is urged to call the Elk Grove Police Department Detective Bureau at 916-478-8060 or Crime Alert at 916-443-HELP (4357). Tips can also be sent via SMS text message by entering CRIMES (274637) on a cell phone, followed by Tip732 and the message.
