Woodville man arrested for fatally shooting wife
WOODVILLE – The Tulare Sheriff’s Department arrested a man who they say shot and killed his wife on Monday night.
The sheriff’s department received a call about shots fired in a residence at the Woodville Labor Camp located at Road 192 and Avenue 160. Deputies from the Porterville substation responded to the scene around 6:30 p.m.
After arriving at the scene, deputies learned that there had been a domestic dispute between 50-year-old Eleazar Alcantar and his wife, 38-year-old Maria Alcantar, in their home. During the dispute, Eleazar Alcantar left the scene but returned a short time later and shot his wife for unknown reasons, according to the sheriff’s department.
During the shooting, two of the couple’s adult children were in the home. One of the children fled the scene after his mother was shot, but the other one stayed in the residence to confront his father. Alcantar told his son to leave the home, and the son complied. The children were uninjured.
By the time deputies made it to the scene, the suspect had barricaded himself in the home. The deputies made verbal contact with the suspect, but Alcantar refused to exit the residence or let the deputies inside the home to check on his injured wife. “A prolonged dialog continued with the suspect, until he refused to continue speaking with deputies,” according to a sheriff department press release.
At that time, the sheriff’s department called their SWAT team and negotiators to the scene. After a few hours trying to get the suspect to exit the residence, the SWAT team finally forced their way into the residence around 9:30 p.m. Alcantar was taken into custody without incident.
Alcantar’s wife was found already deceased inside the residence with a gunshot wound.
Alcantar was booked at the Tulare County Main Jail on charges of homicide.
