Tagger Trio Busted for Assault
June 15 – Fillmore
Three locally infamous members of a “tagging crew” were arrested by Fillmore Police on June 12th following their violent physical attack upon a member of a rival graffiti artist. Ty Gregory Casey, 19, Daniel Mendez, 20, and Anselmo Sandoval, 19, had been the subject of an investigation into the beating of a 17-year-old victim and reputed member of another “tagging crew”.
The attack had been witnessed by an off-duty Fillmore Police officer on June 4th, who observed three young men knocking a fourth to the ground and stomping him into submission, at which point the assailants reportedly fled the scene in a car. “Local taggers have become more territorial,” according to Fillmore Police spokesman Sgt. Anthony Aguirre, adding that “it’s not just about painting their names on walls anymore because they’re defending their turf with high levels of violence.”
The juvenile victim of the June 4th attack suffered a concussion, lacerations to the head, and multiple abrasions.
Ventura County Sheriff’s investigators, working together with the Fillmore Police Gang Unit later found the suspect vehicle and interviewed additional witnesses to the attack which led to the identification and ultimate arrest of Casey, Mendez, and Sandoval. All three were arrested and booked into Ventura County Jail on charges of Assault With a Deadly Weapon. They remain in custody with bail for each set at $20,000.
Fillmore Police have posted a request for public assistance in this case, seeking additional information anyone may have about the incident. The contact for anyone having such information is Detective Beau Rodriguez at (805) 524-2235.
