Robbers wanted more than Pizza

SALINAS—The Salinas Police Department arrested Angel Perez 18, of Salinas and two other juveniles for robbing a delivery person of his pizzas on Friday night.

The Salinas Travel Inn

At about 9:00 p.m., a pizza delivery person was bringing pizzas to a room in the Travel Inn located at 425 Monterey St.  When he started walking to the room he noticed a male wearing a black hoodie that appeared to be in his 20’s was walking toward him. He attempted to make it back to his vehicle when he was cut-off by another Hispanic male wearing an identical color hoodie.  The man grabbed the pizza from his hands and demanded his money. When the victim told the suspect he had no money on him, the suspect brandished a handgun and repeated his demands.  The victim showed him that is pockets were empty.  The two suspects fled the area with the pizza.

At about 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Salinas Police arrested Perez and the two other juveniles as they drove through a “Driving Under the Influence”(DUI) checkpoint that was set-up near Kern Street and East Market Street in Salinas. Officers that were working the checkpoint recognized the names and remembered towing their BMW that had several pizza boxes in the vehicle.

“Officers did arrest the suspects and towed their vehicle because they had no driver’s license.” Salinas Police Investigations Sergeant Christopher Lane Said. Salinas Police were able to identify and arrest the 17 year-old that drove the getaway vehicle during the robbery.

Perez was booked into the Monterey County Jail for a weapons charge along with a robbery, conspiracy and gang crimes.  The other two juveniles were also booked into the Monterey County Jail for the same charges.
