Six Alameda teens injured after joyride
Early Friday morning, Alameda police and emergency rescuers responded to a car crash in the 800 block of Island Drive. Six teenagers, none of them legally old enough to drive, collided head on into a tree after a 1:30 a.m. joy ride.
The 15-year-old driver, who was cut out of the mangled sedan by firefighters, suffered serious injury and as of Monday morning, remained in critical condition at Highland Hospital. According to the Sacramento Bee, the other teens, four 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old, escaped the accident without life threatening injuries, but as reported by KRON 4, one victim does remain at Oakland’s Children’s Hospital with back injuries. Those who knew the passengers stated that several attended Alameda High School.
Witness Jessica Burns, who spoke with ABC News, stated that after the collision, “’it was quiet for about a minute or two, and then all of a sudden, we heard, ‘Oh my god, are you OK Are you OK?” screaming the names.’”
Investigators say the car belonged to the parents of one of the passengers, who told authorities the vehicle was taken without their knowledge.
In California, a driver with a provisional permit, under the age of 18, cannot operate a vehicle without a licensed driver 25 years or older.
Police also found beer in the trunk of the car, which was later said to belong to the car’s owners. According to Alameda Police Lt. Rob Frankland, the California State Department of Beverage Control has been called to investigate the matter.
A spokesmen for the Alameda Police Department has stated that they are not in a hurry to file charges; their primary concern remains the condition of the still hospitalized passengers.
