Pebble Beach man threatens Salinas Hospital staff
Suspect made reference to Colorado shooting
SALINAS—The Salinas Police Department arrested John Brazil, 55, of Pebble Beach after he threatened the staff of Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 27, when Brazil called the crisis-line at the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula and indicated that he wanted justice for the death of his mother.
Brazil stated that he was going to shoot every doctor and nurse on the entire floor. He also made several references to the recent Colorado mass murder. “He made several threats as if he was going to carry out a similar type incident.” Salinas Police Officer Miguel Cabrera said. Police were unable to make contact with him as several attempts resulted in negative results.
Police were able to use Brazil’s cell phone records to determine that he was staying at his decreased parents’ home in Pebble Beach. Salinas Police Officers accompanied by Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies went to the address in Pebble Beach and found Brazil by himself in the residence.
Authorities made several attempts to get him out of the house but he refused to come out. After several minutes Brazil opened a bedroom window and demanded an explanation as to why the police were looking for him. “Obviously we take these types of specific threats seriously.” Cabrera added, “We want to prevent another tragedy like the one that happened in Colorado.”
While an officer engaged Brazil in conversation other officers acted quickly and grabbed him. He was eventually pulled through the window and taken into custody.
Brazil was taken to Monterey County Jail and booked on charges of making criminal threats and resisting arrest. His bail has been set at 1,000,000 dollars.
