Greenfield Baby suffered at end of his life
Born on Oct. 28, 2010 in King City, Camilo Esteban Miramontes saw an end to an already short life.
According to a police report, his mother, Aracely Mares, moved baby Camilo and his two-year-old brother to the Monterey County town of Greenfield, where they lived with Mares’ boyfriend, Diego Burgos. But before he reached his first birthday, Camilo was dead on Sept. 5, 2011.
Last Wednesday, prosecutors stated that the 10-month-old baby was murdered at the hands of Burgos. During the trial a doctor testified that the baby’s injuries were likely sustained by someone swinging the baby by his legs and slamming his head against a wall or another hard surface.
According to the report, the baby was then left alone to suffer for at least two days before Mares and Burgos took him to Mee Memorial Hospital in King City, where staff realized the seriousness of his injuries and transferred the baby to Stanford Hospital’s trauma center. But even Stanford’s top pediatric doctors were not able to save the boy, who had a fractured skill, bleeding in his brain, broken legs, and several other injuries. According to a coroner’s report, the cause of death was blunt force head trauma.
Greenfield police officers arrested 20-year-old Burgos soon after the baby arrived at Stanford Hospital on suspicion of killing his girlfriend’s baby.
One of Burgos’ friends also testified that Burgos said he did not like the 10-month-old and said “they did not get along.” Prosecutors also said that Burgos blamed the infant for causing Mares to have a miscarriage when she was pregnant with his baby.
Doctors said they determined that Camilo had been beaten by someone on several past instances before his fatal beating in September. Mares is also expected to testify. The defense has not called any witnesses, but judging from cross examination of the prosecution’s witnesses, the defense attorney will likely try to convince the jury that Mares was an abusive mother who caused Camilo’s death.
Burgos’ defense attorney said his client was a hardworking farm worker who cared for his girlfriend’s two young sons. If convicted, Burgos faces life in prison.
