Burbank couple charged with child abuse and death of 5-week-old
A pair of Burbank parents were charged with Child Abuse on November 21st after their infant daughter succumbed to injuries believed to have been caused by them. The infant’s mother, 21-year-old Elizabeth Carter was sent to jail, where the 19-year-old child’s father, Matthew Wojcik, has been detained since the month before.
Burbank Police were first notified of the child’s injuries on October 23rd when staff from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles suspected that a 5-week-old girl brought in with multiple broken bones and brain swelling had been abused.
In an interview with the Burbank Leader, Burbank Police Lt. Eddie Ruiz said, “[The baby] was shaken very hard, which caused internal injuries.”
After interviewing hospital staff and the infant’s parents, police arrested Wojcik on October 24th for felony child abuse. At the time, his bail was set at $100,000.
The child was in critical but stable condition until November 9th, when she succumbed to her injuries and was taken off life support. On the morning of November 27th, Carter was arrested for Child Abuse and was booked at the Burbank Police Department Jail where her bail is set at $130,000. Wojcik remains in custody while his charges were amended to Child Abuse causing death.
