Three shot, Including 8-year-old girl, in Madera Gang Shooting
MADERA – A gang member opened fire at another member of the same gang, killing him and wounding an innocent girl caught in the crossfire.
The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. at Tulare Street and Wessmith Way on Wednesday in Madera.
Police say the shooting was the result of an argument between two members of the same gang on the juvenile justice campus at Enterprise Secondary School. Some time after the fight, the suspect drove up to a home the 18-year-old victim was standing outside of, got out of his vehicle and started firing his gun. One of the shots hit the victim in the chest. He later died at the hospital.
Two other rounds from the gun hit two bystanders, including an 8-year-old girl who was walking to a store with her uncle 40 to 50 yards away, police said.
“The 8-year-old girl was some distance away and was really at the wrong place at the wrong time and one of those rounds hit her in the arm,” said Madera Interim Police Chief Steve Frazier.
The girl was taken to Madera Community Hospital to be treated and is expected to be okay. The man who was hit, who police say is related to the murdered victim, was shot in the foot. He is also expected to be okay.
Police are still investigating the shooting, but have strong leads and feel they are close to identifying the suspect. Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the Madera Police Department.
