Santa Barbara – Habits can be hard to break, and Celedonio Aguirre has a bad habit: residential burglary.
Aguirre, 44, was out on bail pursuant to multiple residential burglary charges on the afternoon of November 30th when, according to Santa Barbara Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Riley Harwood, SBPD 911 Emergency operators received a report of a residential burglary that had just taken place.
The 911 caller was a middle-aged female “who had returned home to find a man standing in her bedroom,” Harwood reported to the media. The female caller described the man whom she reported as telling her that he was in her house in search of his pet, whereupon he promptly fled the premises.
Shortly thereafter, Aguirre was observed in broad daylight by SBPD Detective John Ingram in a Santa Barbara westside residential area in close proximity to the reported burglary address. Knowing that Aguirre does not reside in that neighborhood, “he was detained for a street interview,” Harwood reported.
Harwood further reported that as soon as Ingram stopped Aguirre, “Aguirre stated ‘I should not have gone into that lady’s house.’” This voluntary comment prompted further interest on the part of Detective Ingram, and he conducted a field search of Aguirre’s person which revealed approximately $1,000 worth of jewelry and coins in his possession. Ingram continued to detain Aguirre as SBPD patrol officers transported the reporting victim to the scene, where she quickly identified Aguirre as the intruder she’d reported.
Aguirre was taken into custody and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on $50,000 bail, where he may have an opportunity to consider his Miranda right to remain silent should he fail to break his bad habits.
