SWAT Standoff at Trailer Park ends with Suspect’s Arrest
FRESNO COUNTY – A Sanger man wanted for armed robbery and running into a police officer’s car is in custody after a brief standoff with a SWAT team at a trailer park.
Officers arrested 24-year-old James Ray of Sanger on Thursday afternoon at the Sandy Point Mobile Home Park in the 17500 block of East Kings Canyon Road, northeast of Sanger.
Authorities received a call that Ray was roaming the trailer park. He is not a resident of the park, but his girlfriend is, police said. Ray was allegedly involved in an incident on Sunday at the trailer park in which he impersonated a police officer and then used a gun to force another resident to the ground. Ray then allegedly stole the victim’s cash and cell phone, authorities said.
“A bulletin on Mr. Ray had been put out this morning (Thursday) that he had been wanted for robbery,” said Fresno County Sheriff’s spokesperson Chris Curtice.
Ray is also the suspect in a pursuit two weeks ago with Sanger Police, in which he allegedly rammed a police car with a stolen car before running into an orchard and getting away.
During Thursday’s incident, police say Ray barricaded himself inside his girlfriend’s trailer. For around 45 minutes, deputies with the sheriff’s department tried to persuade the suspect to surrender. Around 4:45 p.m., when the SWAT team arrived and began getting ready to enter the trailer, Ray surrendered.
He was booked into the Fresno County Jail.
