Fresno Gang Member Shot and Killed by Police
FRESNO – Officers shot and killed a gang member who was the suspect in shooting last month.
The Fresno Police Department learned that the 30-year-old suspect, who has not been named, was at the Cedar Woods Apartments in the 3700 block of North Cedar Avenue. Police had previously served four search warrants at other locations attempting to find the suspect.
On Tuesday, a tactical team with the police department attempted to serve a search warrant at the apartment complex. Around 3:45 p.m., the man left one of the apartment units and walked over to a black Cadillac Escalade in a carport.
Detectives identified themselves to the man and told him to submit to arrest.
“The suspect reached into his waistband and the officers saw a handgun,” said Captain Randy Dobbins with the Fresno Police Department.
The man refused to submit to arrest and then reached for his handgun, Dobbins said.
“As he was drawing his weapon, officers fired to protect themselves,” he said.
Officers attempted to perform CPR on the man, but he died at the scene.
The man was a suspect in a Nov. 10 gang-related shooting in Pinedale. The victim in that shooting sustained non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was also wanted in connection to three robberies and had an extensive criminal history.
His girlfriend was at the apartment complex when he was shot by officers. She was taken to the police station for questioning, but was not placed under arrest.
