Pipe bomb maker injures himelf
ANTIOCH – Police arrested 53-year-old Frank Trout of Antioch for possessing and manufacturing explosive devices after he showed up at the hospital with burns to his face and hands.
On Sunday at about 2 pm, according to an Antioch Police press release, Contra Costa County Fire Department units, along with Antioch police, were dispatched to a house to investigate smoke coming from the home. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing the resident, Trout, walk out of the house with apparent burns to his hands, and leave in a car.
Trout showed up at Sutter Delta Medical Center with burns to both his hands and face. He reportedly admitted there that his injuries were the result of an accident he had while making pipe bombs at his home.
Responding to this information, the Antioch police immediately closed intersecting streets and evacuated all nearby residents, while calling on the Walnut Creek Police Department Bomb Squad for assistance. The bomb squad located explosive devices and materials, and disposed of them to make the crime scene safe.
It is not known what Trout’s motives or plans were at this time. His home is located within walking distance of Fremont Elementary School, Antioch High School, and Live Oak High School, along with the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, so his proximity to several sensitive and populated areas is a concern, even though they were all quiet during the winter holiday break. The Contra Costa Times has reported that Trout told police that he “liked fireworks and wanted to see them explode.”
Trout was released from the medical center and transferred to the County Jail in Martinez. Anyone with any information about Trout or his activities may cal the Antioch Police investigations Bureau AT 925-779-6926, or text an anonymous tip to 274637 using the key word ANTIOCH.
