Man Shot and Killed by Deputies Identified
FRESNO – The man who died after an officer-involved shooting Monday evening has been identified.
Randall Lee Davis, 51, died after being shot by a Fresno County sheriff’s deputy in what was apparently a “suicide by cop” incident, according to the sheriff’s department.
Around 5:25 p.m. on Monday, someone called 911 to report a man acting suicidal in the 5000 block of East Thomas Avenue, near Willow Avenue and Highway 180. A deputy responding on the scene was immediately confronted by Davis, who had a box cutter in his hand.
The deputy fired one shot at Davis, but his gun wasn’t working properly, and Davis was able to jump on the deputy and start fighting with him, Sheriff Margarat Mims said.
The two continued to struggle against each other and the fight moved into the street when a second deputy arrived on the scene. When he saw what was happening, he fired his gun and hit Davis.
“Thank goodness the second deputy that arrived was able to put an end to the fight to keep his beat partner from being injured,” Mims said.
Davis, who has a criminal history, died at the scene. Authorities said he had already cut himself several times by the time the first deputy showed up on the scene.
Both the deputies involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave.
