Car Window Smasher Busted by Police
A man is in custody after he allegedly went on a car window-smashing spree in San Luis Obispo on Saturday.
According to SLOPD, they received a 911 call around 10:22 p.m. from an alert citizen reporting he was following a suspect who was running down the street breaking vehicle windows. The citizen said he chased the suspect, who was later identified as Matthew Martin, 21, for several blocks until he caught and detained Martin while waiting for officers to arrive.
Officers learned that Martin was originally seen in the area of Johnson Avenue and Phillips Lane where they located the first broken window. The citizen followed Martin to the area of Kentucky Street and Stafford Avenue. He saw Martin break three additional car windows between the two locations. The citizen told police that Martin fled from him and was eventually detained by him in the area of Bond Street and Hathway Avenue.
Martin was booked into SLO County Jail for felony vandalism and being drunk in public. The damages are preliminarily estimated at approximately $3,000.
