The victim, reportedly a man in his mid-30s, sustained at least one gunshot wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-family residence in the 3400 block of Nut Plains Drive. Police later identified the man as 35-year-old Paul Tereschenko.
According to the Sheriff’s department, Rancho Cordova police officers responded to a call shortly before 5pm about a man exhibiting erratic behavior toward other family members inside a home. Two patrol officers reportedly arrived at the scene and began an investigation, during which they were directed to the bedroom of the home to speak to the man in question. Several family members of the victim were inside the residence at this time, but none were reportedly involved in the altercation or injured. Both police officers sustained minor to moderate injuries from being struck by the victim prior to him being shot.
The Sheriff’s Department says the incident will be investigated by the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, as is standard practice with any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction.
