Suspect Fatally Shot in Attempted Robbery
A suspect in an attempted robbery of a store in the Rosemont area on Folsom Boulevard was shot and killed by a store employee, according to an official Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department press release.
On Sunday, February 17, shortly after 3pm, Sheriff’s deputies and Rancho Cordova police officers reportedly responded to the Metro PCS store at 8975 Folsom Boulevard as an employee had called to report a gunman had come to rob the business and he had shot the robber during the incident.
Upon arrival, deputies reportedly discovered two male employees standing outside the business. They directed deputies inside, where a male adult, who had sustained at least one gunshot would to his upper body, was lying unresponsive in the back of the business. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and a handgun believed to have been in the possession of the decedent was reportedly located in close proximity to him. Authorities later identified the man as 30-year-old Derick Hunter or Citrus Heights.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the two employees in the store at the time were detained for questioning and were cooperating fully with investigators, who recovered the firearm used by the employee inside the store. There were reportedly no other customers inside the business at the time, and no information suggested the existence of any additional suspects involved.
This incident is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Any decisions regarding criminal charges in this case will be made by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, after the completion of the investigation by the Sheriff’s Department.
