Arrest Made During DUI Checkpoint Hit-and-Run
A Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint held Friday, February 22, 2013, in the area of Greenback Lane and Birdcage Drive received a great deal of action as the pursuit by officers of a reckless driver resulted in a hit-and-run eventual arrest of the suspect, according to an official press release.
Michael Ballard, 25, was taken into custody by CHPD officers for several violations including driving under the influence. Ballard was arrested after roving patrol officers spotted a reckless driver in the area of Sayonara Drive and San Simeon Drive. Officers reportedly attempted to make an enforcement stop of the driver – later identified as Ballard – but he refused to stop and led officers on a chase towards the checkpoint. During the chase, Ballard reportedly drove the wrong way on Greenback Lane, struck the center divider, and destroyed city property, including a curb and fencing.
As the chase approached the checkpoint, personnel at the checkpoint were reportedly ordered to abandon the checkpoint immediately. Ballard reportedly turned southbound on a side street just prior to reaching the checkpoint, his vehicle became disabled and he abandoned the vehicle and began fleeing on foot. A perimeter was established and Ballard was eventually apprehended.
According to the CHPD, Ballard demonstrated objective signs and symptoms of intoxication and was taken into custody. The CHPD says two DUI arrests were made during the February 22 checkpoint.
