Arrest Made After Police Find Concealed Weapon in Man’s Truck
ARROYO GRANDE – A man on probation, who was also recently released from County Jail after posting bail, was arrested Wednesday morning after police reportedly found a rifle concealed in his truck.
Aaron Charles Kirby, 35, was taken into custody just before 11 a.m. on March 6 on Brittany Street in Arroyo Grande, after a search of his black Ford Ranger revealed he had a .22 caliber rifle concealed in a trash bag on the floorboard of the vehicle. Officers also discovered a suspicious container in the car that turned out to be a plastic can with a galvanized pipe and cap inside the can, police said.
The Police Department had received an “Officer Safety” BOL indicating that Kirby had recently been released from custody and may be armed with firearms.
An officer spotted Kirby driving his Ranger in the area of South Elm Street and Farroll Road in Arroyo Grande, and followed the man to Brittany Street, a residential cul-de-sac, where the suspect parked near the end of the street.
According to the Police Department, the officer parked his patrol vehicle behind the Ford Ranger and made contact with Kirby, who allegedly provided several different stories as to why he parked in the residential cul-de-sac. Kirby had recently posted bail for his arrest on Wed. Feb. 20th for possessions of drugs, weapons and items reported as stolen during local burglaries and probation violation.
Additional officers were called to the scene and Kirby’s vehicle was searched, revealing the concealed weapon and suspicious container, which prompted authorities to call in the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad, which took the suspicious container off-site to be examined, police said.
The Police Department hasn’t received the findings of the suspicious container secured by the Bomb Squad.
Kirby was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and committing crimes while out on bail. He was booked at County Jail, where he was still being held.
